This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.
Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.
